The Perfect Host
The Men and Their Bees
Most of the male-dominated bees were for labour intensive activities like threshing, logging, land clearing and building homes and barns.  Generally lasting several days, the men camped out or "stayed over" if there was room, but expected to be fed, entertained, and their whistles kept wet.
According to Adam Shortt in The Life of a Western Settler Before the War of 1812, Queen's University:
"
After the specific duties of the bee were ended, the young men indulged in trials of strength, while their elders discussed the crops, prices; local politics and the prospects of the ensuing year. The elderly women extended the circulation of the personal gossip of the neighbourhood, while the younger ones, after disposing of the rude accompaniments of the feast, were ready for the dance, the round of country games and the repartee of flirtation."
