A Drachm of This and a Tincture of That
Household Chemistry
Before the days of standard measure and countless cookbooks, many household duties were based on scientific principles, and it was important for a woman to know the chemical properties of plants and animal products, in order to create the desired output.

Bread-making, cheese-making, butter-churning, soap-making and the preservation of foods, were all a result of chemical reactions.  Home remedies depended on this science, as did cooking, cleaning and basic survival.
